The Mediterranean diet, often praised by numerous enthusiasts worldwide, is a fortunate aspect of living in our country. We are privileged to have an abundance of fresh vegetables and high-quality products readily available. Unfortunately, not everyone outside of Spain can enjoy such a wholesome diet. However, the fast-paced nature of our society has led us to gradually neglect this fantastic dietary tradition. Instead, we have become reliant on pre-packaged and heavily processed foods, which are laden with chemical additives and detrimental ingredients that pose risks to our health.
There is a common misconception that margarine is a healthier alternative to butter, but this belief is far from accurate. In reality, both margarine and butter pose equal risks to our health. Margarine’s composition is predominantly made up of trans fats, which are unsaturated fats that contribute to high cholesterol levels and consequently, cardiovascular issues. Furthermore, margarine often contains excessive amounts of salt, which can increase the likelihood of developing hypertension. It is important to note that margarine should not be consumed daily, as it is not a nutritious food choice.
Often, we find ourselves sitting on a terrace and, almost instinctively, ordering a Coca-Cola. The popularity of such beverages has grown to the extent that there are individuals who have become completely dependent, consuming multiple drinks daily. This addiction can be attributed to the composition of soft drinks, particularly the presence of sugar. Essentially, these beverages consist of water, sugar, and carbonation, lacking any significant nutritional value. Moreover, they are highly caloric and can contribute to the development of diabetes-related issues.
The bread of the past differs greatly from what it is today. It’s not that bread itself is inherently bad, but rather that it is no longer made naturally. In earlier times, bread was crafted using high-quality, natural ingredients, and it was considered an essential component of a balanced diet. However, nowadays, bread is produced using refined flour of inferior quality, excessive amounts of salt, and added sugars. These shortcuts are taken to reduce production time and costs, compromising people’s well-being. If you happen to know of a traditional bakery in your city, it would be advisable to purchase bread from there instead.
Our health is being significantly compromised by the fast-paced lifestyle we lead. Bottled juices, upon closer inspection of their labels, reveal a lack of actual fruit content. Instead, they contain numerous chemical additives and excessive amounts of added sugar, which is unnecessary considering the inherent sweetness of fruits. Excessive sugar consumption can lead to health issues like diabetes. It is advisable to avoid consuming these ultra-processed products and opt for freshly squeezed fruit juices instead.
